When the night blinks
When the Night Blinks is an interactive illustrated storybook that introduces children to the hidden wildlife of Danish forests through curiosity, play, and visual storytelling. Designed for children aged 4–6, the project combines atmospheric illustrations, gentle interaction, and educational storytelling to transform biodiversity into an engaging bedtime adventure. Inspired by nostalgic picture books and the quiet mystery of the forest after sunset, the experience encourages children to explore nature while developing an emotional connection with the animals that depend on it.

Discovering the forest after dark
When the Night Blinks reimagines nature education through the lens of imagination. Created as an interactive digital picture book, the project invites young readers to follow the hidden lives of endangered Danish forest animals as the sun sets and the forest awakens. Rather than presenting facts alone, each page combines storytelling, illustration, and interaction to transform learning into an experience filled with curiosity and discovery.
Every creative decision - from the narrative structure to the illustrations - was designed to spark emotional engagement while encouraging children to appreciate the fragile ecosystems surrounding them.
Where learning meets wonder
The project balances education with fantasy, allowing children to explore wildlife through playful interactions instead of traditional teaching methods. Inspired by nostalgic bedtime stories and contemporary digital experiences, the book demonstrates how thoughtful visual communication can simplify complex environmental topics without losing their sense of magic or imagination.

Building a magical visual world
The visual identity draws inspiration from traditional painted children's books while embracing the possibilities of digital illustration. A restrained palette of deep blues, warm yellows, and vibrant accents reflects the mystery of nighttime forests, allowing light itself to become a storytelling element. Textured brushes imitate traditional media, giving every illustration warmth and tactile character despite being created digitally.
The consistent visual language creates a cohesive atmosphere that guides readers naturally from one scene to the next.
Storytelling through interaction
Every illustration serves a narrative purpose while encouraging curiosity through movement and exploration. Small animations, playful interface elements, and interactive moments allow children to participate in the story rather than simply reading it. This approach supports engagement without distracting from the narrative, making interaction feel like a natural extension of the forest's magical world.
The result is an experience that blends storytelling, education, and play into a single visual journey.
Designing for young explorers
The project was designed specifically for children between four and six years old, with simplicity and accessibility guiding every design decision. Clear typography, intuitive navigation, and consistent visual cues make the experience approachable for young readers while remaining engaging for parents and educators. Beyond entertainment, the project encourages conversations about biodiversity and the importance of protecting Danish wildlife through empathy rather than instruction.
Inspiring curiosity through design
When the Night Blinks demonstrates how illustration, interaction, and storytelling can work together to make environmental communication memorable for children. By replacing information-heavy learning with emotional experiences, the project encourages curiosity before knowledge - creating stronger and more meaningful connections with nature.
A story beyond the pages
Although designed as a single chapter, the project establishes a flexible visual system that could grow into a complete interactive series exploring Denmark's diverse landscapes. It reflects my interest in designing experiences that educate through emotion, combining thoughtful illustration, playful interaction, and purposeful communication into a cohesive visual narrative.
